Siddle puts hand up to lift

AUSTRALIAN quick Peter Siddle has put his hand up for a below-par start to the Test series against India and says he needs to start building greater pressure on the home side's batsmen.

Siddle's record in the current series of two wickets at an average of 81.00 is an ugly sight and the 28-year-old admits he needs to lift.

However the Mohali pitch could spell double trouble for India because not only is it expected to have more pace and bounce than the Chennai and Hyderabad tracks, but it holds extra significance for Siddle.

"I debuted there back in 2008. There has always been a little bit more bounce there," Siddle says.

"It's going to be nice to get back in there in the rooms and see the place where I did get my opportunity.

"Hopefully a few more scalps would be nice too.

"Personally, the consistency hasn't quite been there, so you're not building that pressure and the batsmen aren't feeling like they're struggling to score.

"I've definitely been lacking there.

"It just comes down to being able to build that pressure for long periods of time.

"In Australia in other series in the past I've been able to do that, which has helped the team."

Siddle said a drawn series would be a massive achievement for the Aussies, who are two-nil down after two matches.

"If we level the series we retain the trophy and that's what it's all about," he said.

Should Australia choose to play three pacemen on Thursday in Mohali after fielding two spinners in the second Test, then offspinning allrounder Glenn Maxwell's spot could be under scrutiny after being accused by coach Mickey Arthur of leaking runs in his 4-127 on debut.

Back-up players Mitchell Johnson and Mitchell Starc would be vying for the third paceman's role alongside Siddle and James Pattinson if Australia opt against Maxwell.

Starc, who made way for Maxwell after a wicket-less match in Chennai, says he bowled reasonably tightly in the first Test but needs to make some breakthroughs.

"I wasn't too disappointed with how the ball came out," he said.

"The wickets weren't there so that's probably the main one (issue)."

The Aussies return to the nets in Mohali on Sunday after having a two-day break.
